Tawatha "Welcome To My Dream" { Extended Album Version} - { Originally released on Epic Records in 1987 / Reissued for CD in 2010 for Funky Town Grooves U.S.A. }

Philadelphia, PA. native, Tawatha Agee, also known as "Mighty T", first came to prominence as co-lead vocalist in James Mtume's funk collective, Mtume, on their 1978 debut Epic Records release, "Kiss This World Goodbye". Having performed background vocals for a diverse array of artists ranging from Luther Vandross, David Bowie, Roy Ayers, the late Lou Rawls, Celine Dion, Jewel, R. Kelly, Narada Michael Walden, the late Phyllis Hyman, Sting, etc., she's graced her operatic voice to a barrage of their respective hit songs. She even co-wrote and sung background vocals on one of Stephanie Mills' biggest hits, 1981's duet with the late great Teddy Pendergrass, the marvelous "Two Hearts".

On her 1987 solo debut Epic Records release, "Welcome To  My Dream", she took those years of experience and expertise, and crafted a great album of uptempo funky numbers, sensual ballads, and mid tempo cuts to get that body working and feet in motion. Let's check out some of the highlights of this overlooked album at the time of it's original release.

"Thigh Ride" - {Written by James Mtume and Tawatha Agee} - {This debut single peaked at #7 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip Hop Singles & Tracks chart}

This song personifies the "Bent and Phased Shifted Performed Notes of the Bass Synthesizer", as it bounce and pounces you on the chest with it's infectious melody and intensely driven performance. The mid rangy clap of the drum machine programmed snare drum, in conjuction with the thump of the kick drum blends well the circus like fills of an accompanying synthesizer, and the funky rhythm guitar licks. Tawatha's vocal peformance is one of sheer delight and fire as she belts out notes that'll have the hairs on the back of neck stand up. She, too, is a "Mistress of Background Vocal Overdubbed Parts" as they're in perfect harmony and synch.

"Love Shine" - {Written by James Mtume}

This mid tempo groover is drenched with an upper mid range sounding bass synthesizer, melodic chicken picked rhythm guitar performed notes, and, once again, circus like synthesizer fills. This soul/funk shuffler comes complete with latin tinged drum programmed percussions, and a sporadic thunderous hard hit snare, that complements Tawatha's clear and crisp vocal delivery like a hand in glove. The sustained synthesizer fills adds a mysterious and haunting feel that gives the track it's pizazz and flare that'll beckon you to turn the volume up. Yet once again, Tawatha's background performed vocals parts are executed with precision and clarity.

"Are You Serious" - {Written by Ed "Tree" Moore and James Batton}

The Funk is in FULL FORCE !! I'm talking about a kick ass programmed noise gated snare, and bumping kick drum, a stabbing bass synth, and yet once again, those funky rhythm guitar lickings & pickings ! The dance floor calleth you to shake thou ass when this banger is thrown on !! What's cool about this song is that it incorporates a memorable melody that'll stay with you well after the party's over ! In this song, you'll hear the earliest digital samplers as one word from Tawatha's chorus is manipulated in various pitches. Though light years ahead of that God forsaken Auto Tune crap we get now, this alteration of the human voice is more bearable. ....... Oh ! Did I mention Tawatha killed her lead and background vocal performance on this track also ?! .... For those not in the know, when I say she "killed" her vocals, I'm actually paying her a compliment, so please don't take it out of context ! ;-)

"More Than Before" - {Written by James Mtume, Tawatha Agee, and K. Grady}

The FUNK won't leave us alone here folks ! This head bopper falls in the exact line as "Are You Serious" in terms of it's "overall feel", but they're two completely different songs. A kicking bass synth, ...... the tried and true hard hit programmed snare, ..... the "in-your-face" kick drum, ..... the occasion cymbal crashes, .....the consistent hi-hat presense, ......the sequenced percussion parts, ......as well as the emotional felt synthesizer performed chords in the bridge, makes this track one of the shining highlights of this slamming album ! ..... and how could I forget Mighty T's lead and background vocal performance ..... EXTRAORDINAIRE & EXCELLENT is how to best describe it !!

"The Waiting's Over" - {Written by former AURRA member, keyboardist Philip Field and Tawatha Agee}

This mid tempo, feel good head swayer, is another selection you'll have on the "repeat mode" in your iPod for sure ! GUARANTEED ! The star of this particular track is the Mini-Moog Bass (I'm assuming it is) as it's melodic and sheer beautiful sounding notes will wrap you around the groove like you've never experienced before. The chord progressions of the accompanying synthesizers, the ringing chordal tones of the Oberheim OB-8 synthesizer (once again I'm assuming was utilized), rounded out by the left panned hi-hat, and the rhythmically dynamic guitar stylings, has HIT written all over it ! I'm shocked Epic Records at that time didn't choose this as a single as it certainly would've climbed the charts in record time. Ex CHANGE saxophonist, Vincent Henry, delivers a blazing solo that added that cherry on top of the sundae of a song, if you will. Once again, Tawatha delivers her most sexy and sensual lead vocal on this track, as well as her accompanying background vocal dubbed parts. Great song !

Behind every great album, there's a great team behind the artist(s) that's never seen, but whose work is felt and appreciated by those that buys and listen to these very same records. I'm referring to the "Unsung Heros" of this particular album, and they are as follows. Michael Jeffries "Michael Jeffries" {1989 Warner Brothers Records}

Memphis, Tennessee born, Oakland, California raised, vocalist/songwriter/producer Michael Jeffries, caught the music bug at very young age when he and several elementary friends formed a group billing themselves as "The Two Things In One". They've had some success locally with Michael as the lead vocalist with two singles, "Silly Song" in 1971 and "Together Forever" in 1973. They became so good, they've opened shows for Earth, Wind & Fire, Bill Cosby, and Funkadelic. Clearly as we can see, Michael was determined to make it in the music business, one way or another.

But blessfully for the very enterprising young man, all that hard worked apparently paid off. In 1977 he was asked to join Bay Area's world renowned Funk/Soul ensemble, Tower Of Power. Michael recorded 4 well received albums during his stay with the group. In 1986 he contributed a song "Razzle Dazzle", as a solo act, on the soundtrack to the hit Goldie Hawn movie, "Wildcats".

Michael and Karyn White, best known for her Babyface penned and produced 1988 R&B hit, "Superwoman" , were both vocalists on jazz fusion keyboardist, Jeff Lorber's 1986 Warner Bros. release, "Private Passion". Then 1989, Michael recorded this self titled solo album for Warner Bros. Records. Various producers and songwriters contributed to this largely unnoticed, but strong effort from a gentleman that has surely paid his dues in the "biz". Let's take another peek at the highlights of this New Jack Swing/Soul de force and see what others missed out on.

First single, "Not Thru Being With You" (Duet with Karyn White) - {Written by James Harris, III p.k.a. "Jimmy Jam" & Terry Lewis : Produced by Jam & Lewis, with Garry "Jellybean Don't Be So Mean" Johnson} - {See accompanying video at the end of this review}

During this time in the late '80's, New Jack Swing was indeed, in full swing (pun intended). Michael & Co. contributed to the then burgeoning NJS movement by recording this funky and upbeat dance number. As typical for the Flyte Tyme crew, the sound emanating from their then Edina, MN based, Flyte Tyme Studios, was that of a hard kick drum that, well, kicked you in the dome, reverbed orchestra sample hits, a thumping bass synth, a neck snapping snare, and their trademarked eerily droned sustained synthesizer chords. This track exemplified all of the above with Michael & Karyn blending their vocal harmonies in perfect harmony.

"Teach Me" - {Written by Michael Jeffries, Nevelle Hodge, & DJ Eddie F : Produced by DJ Eddie F}

The New Jack Swing and the street Sound Of New York City, my hometown, just don't stop ! ... and it sho nuff didn't stop here on this bangin' track. If you're familiar with sound that put Heavy D & The Boyz on the map, you'll hear it right here. On backgroud vocals, you'll hear the beautiful sounds of Terri Robinson and Tabitha Brace. One of NJS's unsung hero's is Nevelle Hodge, as his contributions to the genre are not often acknowledged. Well Nevelle, I took notice and you're a baaaaad cat on the keyboards. Your Korg M1 Synthesizer Baritione Sax solo's are second to none. The staccato bass synth performed notes, piano fills, James Brown chants, the orchestra hits, the funky tambourine, and the ever present Roland 808 sub octave HEAVY kick drum patch, are the focal points on this hot track ! Michael's lead and background vocal performance is street ruff n' ready, and downright grimey ... in other words, he sung his ass off !

"Jealous Heart" - {Written By Garry Johnson, Lisa Carlson, & Michael Jeffries : Produced by Jellybean Johnson}

Let's take it back Minny Apple Style here for a minute. This upbeat foot tapper comes courtesy of that same heavy kicked bass drum, hard hit snare drum, and loud cymbal crashes as done by Jellybean behind the kit. Michael starts off with a mild even tempered vocal, the gradually builds to a roar, as the orchestra hits are knocking you with that 'one, two, left, right' combination. The female vocal parts (not sure if they're Karyn White or Lisa Keith, or both), but in any regard, they stand on their own. Of course, what's a Jellybean produced track without one of his searing, and rockish guitar solos, and it comes blazing through on this one. {Honestly, and this is just my opinion, I think Jellybean should've been THE TIME'S lead guitarist. Nothing against Jesse, that boy is bad ! .... bu .... bu ... but Jellybean's solos are waaaaay better !! .... just my opinion folks !}

"I'm Waiting" - {Written by Garry Johnson & Lisa Carlson : Produced by Jellybean Johnson}

The Twin Cities Funk train keeps rollin' on, and it's very clear there are no red signals ahead on this melodic and funky bass synth fueled head bopper ! Here we go again with the migraine inducing hard hits of the snare (but you don't mind that at all though), the sustained chords of the synthesizer, the keyboard runs and fills, the harmonic backgrounds. Michael's lead vocal performance is the centerpieces of attraction here as he utilizes the full frequency range of his voice, and they're sung, once again, with heart and soul.

"We Loved" - {Written & Produced by Darryl Duncan & Michael Jeffries}

We take the tempo down a bit on the mellow and easy flowing ballad. With the help of an extraordinary talented Chicago area based songwriter/producer/musician, Darryl Duncan, this song is taylor made for those late night activities, ones of which I'll leave to your imagination ;-) ..... The melody is what will draw you into this song as it grooves with sweet sounding synthesizers, cool electric bass guitar lines, no overdoing with the drum programming, and perfectly executed string synthesizer parts. Michael lead vocal, as usual, is at it's finest as he sings a song of yearning, desire, and passion for that significant other. Great song !

"99 Lies" - {Written & Produced by Jay Logan}

This song incorporates a nice funky, uptempo, and cool dance groove, topped with a Cameo influenced bass line. You'll not only hear, but feel the in the pocket drum programming, as the beautifully sung background vocals supplements Michael's strong and melodious lead vocals. Synthesizer horns were used a lot during this time in R&B, and they're consistently heard throughout the song, but it's done tastefully, and not overbearing. They're placed in the right places.

Unfortunately, this was Michael's one and only release for Warner Brothers due to tepid sales. It's a shame too because, the typical, "suits" at these major record companies main concern was their bottom line. Had Warners given him 'another shot', who knows, he could've broke through. But fortunately for US, the true music lovers, Michael is back with an incredible CD, that features both his daughter and son, aptly titled, "Michael Jeffries Daughter and Son". The title of the CD is called, "Family Affair", and I strongly recommend you pick up a copy. Good music is back indeed ! .... and with a vengeance at that ! .... and it's about time !

Brenda Russell "Two Eyes" { Originally released in 1983 on Warner Brothers Records / Intelligent Idea To Have This Album Reissued For CD in 2002 on Spy Records }

Quintessential singer/songwriter/musician, fellow Brooklyn, New York native, Brenda Russell, written some of music's most treasured and beloved songs. Whether they're recorded for herself, or the many artists that covered her compositions, Brenda Russell's songs are some of the most recognizable in recorded music history. Most people may know her best from such classic recordings, like 1988's "Piano In The Dark", and depending how old you are, 1979's "So Good, So Right". But on this nine selection, Tommy LiPuma produced, 1983 Warner Brothers Records MASTERPIECE, "Two Eyes", she created some of the FINEST recordings in her entire career, I think.

 

This landmark, and terribly overlooked album, features some of the most high in demand session musicians and vocalists the music industry had to offer during that particular time. Those musicians include, keyboardist/saxophonist, Larry Williams, bassist Nathan East, drummer John "JR" Robinson, film composer extraodinaire/keyboardist, James Newton Howard, keyboardist/singer Patrice Rushen, keyboardist/producer megalith David Foster, singer/guitarist Christopher Cross, synthesizer wizard Robbie Buchanan, percussion master Paulinho da Costa, the late great session guitarist David Williams, fantastic keyboardist L. Leon Pendarvis, and a slew of extremely gifted heavyweight musicians and vocalists. To this very day, a lot these musicians are still in demand. 

 

Let's take another look at an album, I hope, will get the well deserved recogniton, and radio airplay, it did not receive back in 1983 ...... and still to this day, does not receive. I'm going address this issue later in this retrospective piece, and possibly come up with a plan to change this horrible injustice to this recording. Just hang in there with me ! ....... Oh ! Trust me, it's going to get better ! ;-)

 

"I Want Love To Find Me" : {Words & Music by Brenda Russell and Bill LaBounty}

 

The mid tempo'd and feel good nature of this optimistic themed song, is the perfect opener of a great album take will take you a wonderful musical journey. Brenda's in fine form here as she sings in her trademark, sometimes whispery, sensual alto voice. The Fender Rhodes chords as played by L. Leon Pendarvis, supplements the bass synth stylings of Robbie Buchanan, and Bill LaBouty's well placed acoustic piano parts quite well, as well as David Williams' harmonic and beautifully rhythm guitar lines. The Seawind Horns performance delivers the added spark to bring this song home.

 

"It's Something" : {Words & Music by Brenda Russell & David Foster}

 

Though wonderfully interpreted by Lalah Hathaway on her brilliant 1990 Virgin Records debut release, Brenda's original verison here, too, is melodically and rhythmically arranged to perfection. Brenda's lead and background vocals is the star of the party here, as they're performed on key, on pitch, and just sound sheer heavenly. David Foster's Fender Rhodes and synthesizer performance, Nathan East's superb bass playing, David Williams' cool guitar licks, and JR Robinson's drum performance, are the key elements that hold this jazzy and soothing track together.

 

"Hello People" : {Words & Music by Brenda Russell and Michael McDonald}

 

This upbeat, danceable, and festive sounding track find Brenda in a comfortable zone as she sings will exurberance and pure delight. The presence of Michael McDonald on Fender Rhodes is surely felt as you can slighty hear the chords used on his hit, "I Keep Forgettin'". Nathan East's lively bass guitar lines, and synthesizers, more than likely the Prophet 5 and/or Oberheim OBX-a, gives the track an aural soundscape that's very infectious. The late drummer, Toto's Jeff Pocaro is featured here on Tambourine, as JR Robinson hold down the drum chair. This song is truly one of many shining moments on this album.

 

"Two Eyes" : {Words & Music by Brenda Russell}

 

This track has got be, hands down, one of the greatest songs in Brenda's songbook. It's mid tempo, mellow, slight AORish (Adult Oriented Rock) feel, comes complete with, once again, the distinctive Fender Rhodes performance, and chords of L.Leon Pendarvis, the Rock N' Roll infused fuzz guitar of David Williams, the steady back beat of JR Robinson, and the magnificent triangle nuances courtesy of Paulinho da Costa. It's a song I could easily hear on Adult Contemporary radio. Once again, this truly one of Brenda's excellent performances, both in the lead and background vocal chores. An epic song to say the least !!

 

"Stay Close" : {Words by Brenda Russell & Music by Dave Grusin's brother, Don Grusin}

 

What Brenda Russell project is complete without a ballad ? On this particular song, romanticism reigns supreme here. This is a "Wedding Song" du jour. The shared keyboard work of James Newton-Howard and co-writer Don Grusin, paints a picture of a couple alone in a cafe somewhere in France, having two glasses of red wine. Once again, Nathan East's bass guitar performed lines will just drown you in love, as does the nimble soulful rhythm guitar pickings of David Williams. Brenda's emotional and passionate vocal delivery is just as beautiful as the song itself. You simply cannot go wrong with this one for the Slow Jam menu in your iPod.

 

"Jarreau" : {Words & Music by Brenda Russell}

 

Here we get to hear Brenda on acoustic piano for the first time. This reggae, brazilian influenced song is yet another standout track on the album. Obviously dedicated to her then Warner Bros. labelmate, Al Jarreau, she scats and sings like that of Mr. Jarreau, while delivering some of her most memorable performed verses in an almost monotone whisper. But it works just fine on this song. Brenda's beautifully acoustic piano parts, alongside L. Leon Pendarvis's classic Fender Rhodes performed chords and runs, are like a hand in glove, they fit just right. You can hear the musical chemistry in both their performances. The rhythm and horn section are rhythmically tight as ever.

 

"New York Bars" : {Words & Music by Brenda Russell} - {Refer to the YouTube Audio Clip At The End Of This Retrospective Review}

 

This song is my personal favorite on "Two Eyes". This mid to funky tempo'd number just grooves from start to finish. From the opening acoustic piano line to the blazing saxophone solo by Larry Williams, this song has "New York Anthem" written over it. Look, if Frank Sinatra and Jay-Z/Alicia Keys could have a "NYC" themed hit, why can't this one be ? Brenda's lead vocal delivery on some of the verses is down right funky and NYC attitude-ish, but you gotta love it ! ... and you guessed it, the rhythm section held it down once again on the melody and vibe.

 

"I'll See You Again" : {Words & Music by Brenda Russell}

 

On this Beatle-esqe sounding tune, we hear Ms. Russell on acoustic piano, playing in perfect harmony with L.Leon Pendarvis's omnipresent Fender Rhodes. This time around, we're blessed with a harmonica solo from none other than Mr. Steveland Morris a.k.a. Mr. Stevie Wonder, and what a blessing it is ! James Newton-Howard's brilliant synthesizer work, Nathan East's single bass note performance, JR Robinson's laid back drum work, Caleb Quaye's ching chang electric guitar, and Paulinho da Costa's always on point, creates the perfect backdrop for this laid back and mellow tune. Another beautiful work of art, one to have in the repeat mode in the iPod.

 

"Look Down, Young Soldier" : {Words & Music by Brenda Russell}

 

I mean .... I .... I .... I can't even find even the words to best descibe this song. Calling it 'magnificent', 'brilliant', 'fantastic', 'beautiful', 'poignant', 'spectacular', 'light years ahead of it's time as it relates to the NUMEROUS wars this country is in right now', 'masterstroke', 'paramount', are just mere understatements. With all that being said as it pertains to this song thus, you'd just have to go out and buy it ! Let me add though, you'll hear in the childrens chorus, a tiny Maya Rudolph, Minnie Riperton's daughter, along with an All-Star cast of vocalists. I'm talking Patrice Rushen, Christopher Cross, Leon Ware, David Lasley, James Ingram, Randy Crawford, Rita Coolidge, the aforementioned Al Jarreau, Joe Esposito, and several other great session vocalist. This is pre "We Are The World". I could only imagine what that day was like ! {Brenda, could you please expound on what that day was like ?}

 

In closing, I'd like to say, when you're listening to an album, from start to finish, you want to feel like you've been given something, a wonderful and neatly wrapped gift. Well, this is that album for me, and I'm sure to all of you reading this that knows the power of this recording. If you have not heard this record, you owe it to yourselves to hear it, or better yet, own it. This way, you'll be given gifts for the rest of your lives. When you do buy it, I have to warn you, DO NOT, and I repeat, DO NOT loan it out to anyone ! Chances are you will NOT see it again ! I PROMISE YOU ! That will happen if you loan this baby out to anyone ! I don't care if it's your wife, your husband, your girlfriend, your boyfriend, ANYBODY ! So to avoid that from happening, do like those old school R&B infomercials and tell them, "Nah my brother, you got to get your own !!"

Mint Condition " 7 " - { (C) 2011 Caged Bird Records / (P) Shanachie Records }

It's hard to believe that is was 20 years ago, a self contained R&B band from Minneapolis/St. Paul/Chicago, burst on the scene that would pick up where their predecessors, SLAVE, The Ohio Players, Earth, Wind and Fire, etc., left off. One of the few, if only, commercially R&B self contained bands still to this day making music, Mint Condition certainly withstood the test of time with the release of their 7th studio album, the aptly titled, "7". Released on Mint Condition's custom record label, Caged Bird Records, through a production and distribution arrangement with Newton, New Jersey based eclectic label, Shanachie Records, the band once again, deliver their brand of funk/Smooth R&B/Carribbean flavor, and of course, ballads, that will surely satisfy their rabid fanbase, and will bring aboard a new generation of believers. Let's take a closer look at the venerable, and VERY NECESSARY band to ever grace the world's stages. ...... Ladies and gentlemen ..... boys and girls ..... funksters and funkettes ..... without further adieu, I present to you ..... MINT CONDITION'S, "7".

"Can't Get Away". This opening track is both adventurous and haunting, in that it's sonic textures are layered in scary atmospheric sounding synthesizers, a delayed reverb snare, a thumped bass guitar, sweeping crash cymbals, and a monster guitar solo courtesy of O'Dell. Stokley's lead and background vocal are sung in his distinctive tenor voice that aches of wanting to be with that lady when she's not there, and you can hear it his delivery. The ending is where it gets busy with the aformentioned guitar solo, and the loud vocalized group shouts.

"I Want You". Stokley and Rick collectively as the sole musicians on this track, keeps the groove moving along, though repetitive, it's sure to get your feet moving with various major and minor chords performed on synths. The funky strummed guitar licks blend well in tandem with the bass guitar, as does the light percusssions in the background. This toe tapper is supplemented by an infectious melody that'll stay in your head, as Stoke's and Ricky's vocal parts are sung, either in conjunction with one another, or separate, it works.

"Walk On", is a mid tempo'd jazzy number sprinkled with a light and airy groove. The fretless bass guitar performed bent notes will conjure up images of Jaco Pastorious, and the strummed rhythm guitar pattern adds a coolness to this late night anthem. The sitar adds that Stylistics, Middle Eastern flavor that blends great with the Fender Rhodes, and vocal play of Stokley, Jef, and Rick. Stokley's lead vocal performace is stellar, to say the least, as he takes notes to sweet highs and pleasant lows, this song is one of the highlights of this fantastic album.

"Mind Slicker", is the only track on the album that closely resemble what you hear on urban radio today, but done MC style, san auto tune, thank goodness. It's another mid tempo track that features a synthesizer harp played throughout the track, synthesizer stabs, finger snaps, sub octave bass synthesizer performed chords and runs, that comes with the lyrical emotional depths of joy and dizzying lows of vulnerability in Stokley's heartfelt performance. It's in the breakdown where supporting drummer Brandon, Stokley and Jef on keys, O'Dell on guitar, get loose in a rockish and funky throwdown, to only bring it down to it's original mellow groove.

First single, the infectious, "Caught My Eye", falls in the long line of classic ballads MC is famously known for ... and it's doesn't disappoint either ! The live drums performed in a jazzy context, but laced in funk overtones, the smooth and mellow guitar lines, the warm sound of a REAL electric bass guitar, the cool keyboard lines, and the unmistakable vocals of Stokley, make up what will be a song that'll be played on Quiet Storm programs for years to come. The lyrical subject matter, in which you can surely figure out just by the title alone, is that what draws us fellas to you lovely and beautiful ladies out there in the first place ..... nuff said ! ;-)

"Bossalude", takes it down to familiar territory the band's ventured before, and that is the island sun setting breeze of just chillin' on a Carribbean beach with a rum punch in tow, .... via Brazil ! The extraordinary steel drum and live drum performance of Stokley,{Hey man, do you have any West Indian lineage in your family ?}, the bossa nova feel of both Rick's bass and O'Dell's guitar, alongside Lawrence El's synthesizer fills and chords, make this one of the best 2:05 running time songs they've ever done.

Album title track, "7", is a nod to their hometown, and a retrospective of their enduring career as told through the rap performed by "K". The openings notes of this tune are that of a trombone, trumpet, tuba, baritone horn, and baritone saxophone .... or so you think ? ..... psych ! They're not ! They're expertly executed by Stokley and/or Jef. That's how sharp these brothers ears are, to replicate, and do so convincingly, a real horn section, you almost couldn't tell the difference. KUDOS GUYS ! The track itself is done in a "gangsta smooth modus operandi", not hardcore, just smooth enough to bear listening to.

OK, Rick Kinchen must've just finished listening to a batch of Al Green records that inspired him to write the "Stax Records' Booker T. & The M.G.'s Studio Session Musician Era-esqe", "Ease The Pain"..... and must have had Stokley sitting next to him, to give HIM the inspiration to capture the essence of the Memphis, TN soul legend. Rick must have been so moved by Al so much to the degree, he helmed most of instrumentation himself, .... probably telling the fellas before the recording session, "You guys chill, I got this ! .... Oh ! Jef, Stoke just hold down the keyboard parts for me, I got the rest". That should give you an idea where this song went.

The mood takes a serious tone on the beautifully written and arranged Lawrence El composition, "Unsung". This Gospel inspired song features the gently performed acoustic piano lines of the composer, the church infused organ performance of guest musician, Darnell Davis, the mellow and fluid bass performance of Rick, an excellent guitar solo performance of O'Dell, and the lead vocal/live drum performance of Stokely. Guest vocalist, Tonia Hughes-Kendrick, adds a nice touch and even balance to Stokley's well tempered, but melodic lead vocal delivery. Great song !

Please refer to the audio YouTube audio of the marvelous Warryn Campbell {Mary Mary's writer/producer}, Kelly Price penned song, "Not My Daddy" in which Kelly duets with Stokley. Most of the instrumentation that consists of live drums, keyboards, and bass guitar are handled by Stokley himself. Lawrence El adds additional keyboard support to this chart topper. The melody ?, what can I say, it's just memorable and catchy. It incorporates a great sing-a-long hook, and a more than spectacular performance from the "cats" themselves.

Closing number, the very interesting, and lyrically funny, .... and quite possibly true in some people's wretched lives ..... you have "Twenty Years Later". This song has a, somewhat, ballroom dancehall/tango feel to it, if you could imagine something like that coming from Mint ..... but yet once again, IT WORKS !!! The Rick Kinchen/Stokley penned number incorporates, what sounds like, once again, a full live orchestra. Yup, you guessed it, synthesizers. I might have to call the The Twin Cities Musicians' Union Local 30-73 on these guys. .... Nah, I wouldn't do that. Stokley handles most of the instrumentation here with the exception of electric guitar, and those honors goes out to Rick. A story of a man who just doesn't seem to get it right after 47 years, is the main subject here .... one of which you would not to emulate. But the track itself smokes. It's full of grandeur, it's very bombastic, particularly as the song progress, as it's one you'll have in the repeat mode in the iPod.

PLEASE SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC AND GO SEE THESE BROTHERS WHEN THEY PLAY YOUR TOWN ! .... AND PLEASE REMEMBER FOLKS, AND I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH, BUY THIS RECORD THROUGH LEGITIMATE OUTLETS, WHETHER IT BE TRADITIONAL OR DIGITAL. YOUR FINANCIAL AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT ARE THE ELEMENTS THAT WILL KEEP THE MUSIC IN FULL SUPPLY FOR YEARS TO COME. WHAT A BETTER WAY TO SAY "THANK YOU" TO MINT CONDITION THAN TO BUY THROUGH LEGITIMATE MEANS. THEY TOO HAVE FAMILIES TO SUPPORT, AS DO THE EMPLOYEES AT SHANACHIE RECORDS, JUST LIKE YOU. PUT YOURSELF IN THEIR SHOES, YOU WOULDN'T WANT SOMEONE, OR ANYTHING, TAKING FOOD OUT OF YOUR MOUTHS, NOW WOULDN'T YOU ? .... WELL, THAT'S WHAT ONE DOES WHEN THEY ILLEGALLY DOWNLOAD AND, STILL, BUY BOOTLEGGED COPIES. Jill Scott "Lovely Day" { Single } - {C&P 2011 Hidden Beach Recordings }

The beautiful and talented singer/actress, Philly native, Jill Scott, returns to the recording scene after a lengthy hiatus, to bless the world with an excellent rendition of the Bill Withers 1977 classic, "Lovely Day". ...... and what a lovely single it is ! This amazing version will appear on the forthcoming Hidden Beach Recordings release, "Just Before Dawn : Jill Scott From the Vault, Vol. 1"

She more than did the song justice as the rhythm arrangement is pretty much the same as the original. From her stellar vocal performance, to the live instrumentation, this will surely race up the R&B Singles charts and pick up more than a few new fans, to the previous ones that grew up listening to her. Let's take a quick peep of a song that will only put her BACK over and beyond the music industry's radar.

The intro is very identical to the original, but it's performed with it's own unique flare and pizzazz. That "pizzazz" consists of a funky and happy bassline, accompanied with the snaky slivery high hit, with the shaker, rounded out by a warm Fender Rhodes piano. The lightly plucked grooving notes of the rhythm guitar supplements the overall feel good vibe of the tune. Jill's vocal delivery is very soft and whispery at first, but gradually builds to the strong powerhouse singer that she is. Her occasionally jazz like scats and fills is what really bring this track home. Her background vocalists sound just as on point, on key, and confident, as they magnificently support Jill lead vocal parts.

Bill Withers will MORE than approve of this version when he hears it. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he got a little upset at Jill for her NOT inviting him to sing along, as I'm sure he would've want to sing with the background vocalists. Of course I wouldn't know if Bill would get upset for not contributing, but you best believe he will probably give Jill and all involved his thumps up of approval. So go out and purchase the single at all fine digital and/or traditional retail outlets.

Stanley Turrentine "Tender Togetherness" { Originally released in 1981 on Elektra Records / Reissued for CD in 2005 on Wounded Bird Records ..... Yes, you read that right, Wounded Bird ..... Don't ask me, I still haven't figured that one out yet :-( ..... AND DON'T WANT TO EITHER !!!! }

The late great tenor saxophonist, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native, Mr. Stanley Turrentine, best known as "Mr. T", delivered one of his finest albums in 1981 on the Elektra Records imprint, titled, "Tenderness Togetherness". He was the original "Mr. T" light years before the thick gold chained, mohawk wearing, former bodyguard turned "A" Team actor the past couple of generations now call Mr. T. Stanley was indeed the first, and will ALWAYS be, "The Original Mr.T". This milestone recording was produced by none other than Denver, Colorado native, and former Earth, Wind, & Fire keyboardist/songwriter/co-producer, and musical director throughout the EWF era that mattered the most, {1972-1983}, the GOD BLESSED, and super talented, Mr. Larry Dunn. This nine selection "Rembrandt" of a recording run the gamut from funk, dance, part rap, ballads, to smooth jazz and R&B, DONE RIGHT !!! There's no better way for me to commemorate the 30th anniversary of this groudbreaking project, but to give this classic it's looooooooooong overdue props. ........ So ladies and gentlemen, I present to you ......... Mr. Stanley William Turrentine's "Tender Togetherness" ......... (((( This is where you applaud ........ C'mon now ! PUT THOSE HANDS TOGETHER !!!! )))

Besides Larry handling most of the keyboard duties, this album feature a wide variety of the best musicians the west coast had, and still, has to offer. They include session drummer great Leon "Ndugu" Chancler, super Contemporary Jazz group Fourplay bassist Nathan East, Larry's then fellow EWF bandmates, guitarist Roland Bautista, Freddie White on drums, Andrew Woolfolk on saxophone, Ralph Johnson and Philip Bailey on percussions and vocals respectively. In addition, Larry's brother Steven Dunn helped out in the drum chair, as well as percussion, as well as venerable session bassist, Byron Miller. Session monster Paulinho Da Costa came on board and graced this project on various percussions. Guest synthesizer wizards to lend their extraordinary talents included Tom Piggott, Denzil A. "Broadway" Miller, Jr. & Jeff Johnson. Also featured are the blazing brass and woodwind quartet of The Phenix Horns, consisting of the late Don Myrick on Saxophones, the late Louis Satterfield on Trombone, Michael Harris on Trumpet, and last, but certainly not least, Rahmlee Michael Davis on Trumpet. Many great 'first call' session musicians and singers contributed their God given talents to this record to help me it the creme de la creme recording that it is. Let me add that the strings are beautifully arranged and conducted by the virtuosic, Mr. George del Barrio. Now let's spotlight some of the highlights of this "8th Wonder of The World".

...... but before we do that, I ABSOLUTELY AND POSITIVELY have to give an honorable mention to the recording/mixing engineer, Mr. Chris Brunt, and his more than competent assistant engineers, Mr. Dennis Hansen and Mr. Warren Weinberg, as well as the mastering engineer, Mr. Ken Perry, for blessing this record with their more than sharp ears and overall sense of musicality. Kudos to those gentlemen for making sure every instrument was miked properly, every 2 inch, 1/4 inch, and half inch tape machine was aligned properly, as well as to make sure the recording console was fully operational so that each track and their levels are at their maximum capability. A special acknowledgement goes out to Indigo Ranch Studio owner, Mr. Richard Kaplan and his wife (I don't know her name unfortunately, but I'd like to Thank her nonetheless for keeping Richard and the studio at their very best), and to their staff for making sure Stanley, Larry, as well as every participant on this record, feel at home and comfortable in order for them to give their 1,000% best to make this album possible. BRAVO EVERYONE !!!

"Hermanos" {Beautifully written & arranged by Eddie del Barrio & Larry Dunn} : This 5:37 opus begins with a haunting, yet ethereal sounding landscape of sweeping percussions, sweet sounding chords of the acoustic piano, in tandem with the earth tonal notes of the Mini-Moog, then breaks into funk throwdown that'll make it so hard for your feet NOT to move. The one thing I love about the track, besides Stanley's dark and husky performed tenor sax lines, is Roland Batista's funky chicken scratch rhythm guitar parts. Nathan East just kills it with his solid bass guitar fretwork and groove, as he plucks, strums, and bended notes on the Yamaha bass (I'm not sure if that was his brand of choice then, but it sounds like he used an Alembic, I'd have to ask him) Of course Larry and Eddie del held it down on the electric piano and synthersizers, respectively. The song is a fantastic start to a more than above average album.

"I'll Give You My Love", is a nice drop top convertible, cruise along the Pacific Coast Highway, or I-95, type of song that'll have your hair blowing in the wind as you have it cranked to 10. Stanley and his tenor sax entertains with a soulful and jazzy vibe that coincides marvelously with the Phenix Horns' undeniable trademarked sound. The coo'ing, soothing, and beautifully tempered background vocals of session stalwarts, Ms. Marlena Jeter and Ms. Gwen Matthews, gives this track a well even balance. Another standout element you'll notice is the rhythmically dynamic Fender Rhodes and Clavinet performance of Denzil Miller, as Larry gives it the Mini-Moog Bass support that is felt, more than heard. Roland Bautista's, once again, lightning fast guitar licks, Byron Miller's thumping bass, and Ndugu's steady backbeat culminates to a party jam that you'll play for days on end. Great song !

"After The Love Is Gone". This 1979 Earth, Wind & Fire golden chestnut is MASTERFULLY, BRILLIANTLY, & VALIANTLY remade here that, to me, gave the original a serious run for the money. Don't get me wrong, I love the EWF version, always have, and always will ! .... Bu .... bu ...but I'd much rather listen to this version, than EWF's version. ...... and why, you ask ? ...... I'll tell you why. Well, simply put, it sounds better, sonically and arrangement wise, that's why..... and here are the other reasons why. Number one, some of the cats that played on the original, and made the original shine in the first place are playing keyboards, drums and horns ....... and we all know whom they are, so I DON'T have to say their names, Larry Dunn, Freddie White, and The Phenix Horns, accompanied by Jerry Hey on trumpet and flugelhorn, and Sidney Muldaow, David Duke on french horns ........ and two, Stanley's warm as a cup of hot chocolate on cold winter's night tenor sax performance. Now let's talk about some of the performances of the musicians that brought this spectacular version to life. This song benefitted from Roland Bautista's light and gentle pluckings, as well as his airy strums on the acoustic guitar, Nathan's superflous bass playing that added the 'meat and potatos', Freddie's 'on the one spit and glue' drumming that keep the musicians on point, and Larry's omnipresent Mini-Moog. The great percussion work of Steven Dunn added a feeling of 'completeness' to the song at large. Oh ! How could I forgot the heavenly sounding vocals of another session vocalist behemoth, Ms. Lynn Davis. She made this song an absolute joy to listen to. It's perfect ! ..... You don't have to take my word for it, just listen for yourselves at the botton of this review.

One of my favorites on this album, and quite honestly, one of my favorite songs of all time, is the Steven Dunn composition, the magnificent "World Chimes". With the author of this tune himself on drums, he knew exactly how to keep the good vibes flowing with his emotion filled, well paced feet and arm work. Larry's tried and true Mini-Moog Bass excursions is just what the doctor ordered, a funky flow, and cure for the bored foot wanting to get it's tap on. Roland's 'wall of sound' guitar fingered fretboard duties blended real nicely with Nathan East's 'stroke of genius' 4 stringed bass guitar performance. But what really sent me into orbit is the bass trombone notes of another session monster, Bill Reichenbach. He played sub octave notes rarely heard on a groovy sounding record. Another highlight for me was Larry's masterpiece performance of the higher registered played notes on the Mini-Moog in tandem with the string section. Together, they sounded one and the same, EXCELLENT ! .... and let's not forget Mr. T and the fine sax playing he displayed here. It's always in tune, and he's always challenging the tenor saxophone to produce sounds the instrument itself never knew could come up with.

To close this 'Eiffel Tower', 'Mt. Rushmore', 'Grand Canyon', 'Lunar Eclipse', 'Denver Eisenhower–Johnson Memorial Tunnel' of an album ...{Smile Larry} ... I present to you, the funk fused party, and Stanley Turrentine anthem, one of them at least, "Havin' Fun With Mr. T". This song is sooooooo funky, I can't even describe it ! Which means you'll just have to whip out the credit card and purchase the CD to hear for yourselves ...... Yes, I went there ! :-) ....... and don't even bother to try and find it on YouTube or Daily Motion, because you won't. Listen, ladies and gentlemen, I would NEVER steer you wrong when it comes to music. You just have to trust me on this one and buy this CD, you WILL NOT be disappointed, I GUARANTEE IT !! With being said .........
